Love of learning
I appreciated book one as it encourages taking time for reflection which we often don’t do in our busy lives. As a retiree I tend to reflect upon the journey my life has followed so far. I realise that goals or plans made early in my life may not have been achieved but I ask the question “how important or meaningful was that goal? Am I disappointed or actually pleased with how plans and experiences have evolved?” I am reminded of the saying that ‘life is what happens when you are making other plans.’ The value of being adaptable and cherishing the opportunities presented is something I have learnt. I have reached achievements that I never would have dreamt I would or could have attained. Some aspirations have remained unwavering such as the value of education as I have always had a passion to learn new things. This passion guided my career and it’s unsurprising that I ended up working in universities due to my respect for knowledge. Even in retirement I enjoy learning and am exploring topics I didn’t have time for such as learning how to garden, re-learning a language, re-connecting to music, learning tai chi and golf together with appreciating daily walks while admiring nature. My love of learning continues to guide my life. Enjoyment and satisfaction aren’t about money or possessions to me but more about simple experiences like having precious time with family and friends. Acceptance and acknowledgement of successes and failures can also bring joy and contentment.
Book two addresses leadership and I reflect on the many people who were in a leadership role and influenced me throughout my career. Many were not what I would determine as worthy leaders as they tended to focus upon how their role provided personal benefits rather than listening to and being an inspiration to the people in their team. Sadly, I often saw behaviours that I was determined I wouldn’t do if I was a leader rather than how I would like to act. In the final 10 years of my career, I did have the opportunity to be a leader and words like collaboration, inspiration, cooperation, motivation and service guided my behaviour. When I follow the people who were in my team, I feel honoured to see how they have become compassionate and effective leaders while advancing careers and making a substantial contribution to our community. I am grateful for what I have learnt from my academic and student colleagues as the opportunity to work with diverse people has mostly been positive. Thank you for your books that inspire, encourage and guide us to reflect and acknowledge our unique lives.
